AI Fridays: AI and the Recovery Paperwork Problem
After a disaster, the hard part isn’t getting federal recovery money; it’s keeping it through years of documentation, reviews and closeout, a burden FEMA is now shifting further onto stretched local grants staff. Presenter Joseph Yocca, drawing on nearly five years in FEMA’s Fort Myers recovery office, most recently as Acting Federal Disaster Recovery Officer, walks through the stages of a Public Assistance project to show where AI genuinely helps and where it adds risk. AI is good at finding, organizing and drafting from a documentary record, but poor at judgment calls with audit consequences, where a confidently wrong sentence is worse than a blank one. Attendees leave knowing where to start and what to keep in human hands.
